From the World-Without to the World-Within

To activate our power within, we have to shift our focus from the world-without to the world-within. Many of us used to see the world-without as cause, and the world-within as effect. For example if we suffer a problem, we seek the cause of the problem outside of ourselves. We have to think the opposite: the world-within is the cause and the world-without is the effect. We are the cause for our problems or success. A self-empowering journey comes from the world-within. Our wisdom and power are from the world-within. The world-within is governed by our mind, our thoughts, and our emotions. The world-within creates the world-without. Therefore, it is extremely important to be aware of who we are.

Ask the question to yourself: “Who am I?” This question is simple and complex. Many of us begin to think about our name, our roles, our parents, our religion, our country, our language, our culture, our education, our work, our body, etc. These do are not make us who we are. Kathleen Schafer (2011) writes truly. “what makes you who you are is the part of yourself that remains unchanged in all the various role you play in your life.” (p. 28) She explains that when we identify ourselves outside our of role with external sources, we reveal our true sources of power. For example, if your job title or your education become who you are, your true power is lost, you would focus on to making the position paramount. We have to think about who we truly are.
The first step to activate the power within is knowing yourself. To know yourself is the door to growth. We have to acknowledge what we do, in order to change our behavior. Acknowledgement is simply a process of recognition. It is willing to be aware of who you are and what you do. To know yourself means to become fully aware of your nature and to use this knowledge as a basis of choice in your life.
To know yourself you should see yourself; To see yourself is a deeper level of awareness. You should be aware of yourself moment by moment, in responses and reaction. You have to give yourself quiet time to reflect on your thoughts, your actions and your responses. To see yourself is like watching a yourself in a movie. You do not judge, rather just observe yourself. In the process of seeing yourself and reflecting on yourself, you become aware of your human nature. In order to become more self-aware you should know about your conscious and subconscious mind.

What do we understand with the conscious and subconscious mind? Why is it important to know about them and how the mind is related to our journey of self-empowerment? Conscious, according to Merriam Webster dictionary, means “awake and able to understand what is happening around you. Being aware of something, observation. A synonyms for conscious is awareness.” Subconscious mind has been defined according to the Merriam Webster dictionary as, “exiting in the part of the mind that a person is not aware of: existing in the mind but not consciously known or felt.” Our subconscious mind is 10 times bigger than our conscious mind, and much stronger.

Joseph Murphy in his book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind explains the subconscious mind and how our subconscious mind influences who we are, what we believe, and do in our life. Research on the brain shows that 95% of what we do or think occurs in our subconscious mind. The conscious mind is our thinking and rational mind. The subconscious mind contains is our habits, as well as our emotions and creative mind.

Your conscious mind is the reasoning mind. It is that phase of mind which chooses. For example, you choose your books, your home, and your partner in life. You make all your decisions with your conscious mind. On the other hand, without any conscious choice on your part, your heart is kept functioning automatically, and the process of digestion, circulation, and breathing are carried on by your subconscious mind through processes independent of your conscious control. According to Murphy, when the subconscious mind accepts an idea, it begins to execute it. The subconscious mind does not judge and it works for good and bad ideas alike. Your subconscious mind can be your worst enemy and your best friend. Your subconscious mind helps you with anything you focus on, no matter how focused and attentive, constructive and positive, or destructive and negative you are. The art is to be aware of your attention and your focus.

Murphy explained the conscious mind like the navigator or captain at the bridge of a ship. “He directs the ship and signals orders to men in the engine room, who in turn control all the boilers, instruments, gauges, etc. The men in the engine room do not know where they are going; they follow orders. They would go on the rocks if the man on the bridge issued faulty or wrong instructions based on his findings with the compass, sextant, or other instruments. The men in the engine room obey him because he is in charge and issues orders which are automatically obeyed. Members of the crew do not talk back to the captain; they simply carry out orders. The captain is the master of his ship, and his decrees are carried out. Likewise, your conscious mind is the captain and the master of your ship, which represents your body, environment, and all your affairs. What you believe in your conscious mind, whether it is true or false, the subconscious mind will accept it as true. The law of life is the law of belief. A belief is a thought in your mind. You can choose to believe that you will achieve something you desire soon, and your subconscious mind will help you to manifest it in your real life. Your beliefs have the power to heal, inspire, strengthen, and prosper you. You can change your life by changing your beliefs.

If you wish for something but do not believe it is true in your conscious mind, your subconscious mind will follow your conscious, and reject you to experience it. For example many in their conscious mind wish to be rich but they do not believe it could happen. They would have conversation with themselves such as, “What are you talking about? It is not true.” In this case you are your own enemy, and your subconscious mind just follows the commands that you really believe. It is necessary for you to be aware of your conscious mind and which conversations you have with yourself.

Your subconscious mind is also your habit, you just do it without thinking about it. Your subconscious mind does not reason things out like your conscious mind, and it does not argue with you controversially. Murphy uses soil as a metaphor for your subconscious mind, : “it is like the soil which accepts any kind of seed, good or bad. Your thoughts are active and might be likened unto seeds. Negative, destructive thoughts continue to work negatively in your subconscious mind, and in due time will come forth into outer experience which corresponds with them. Remember, your subconscious mind does not engage in proving whether your thoughts are good or bad, true or false, but it responds according to the nature of your thoughts or suggestions. For example, if you consciously assume something as true, even though it may be false, your subconscious mind will accept it as true and proceed to bring about results which must necessarily follow, because you consciously assumed it to be true.” ( Murphy, Joseph, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (p. 14). Being mindful, meditation, and affirmation are some strategies for your subconscious mind that can help to reprogram any habit, thought or personality that you do like.

When you are familiar with your human nature, you can accept yourself and forgive yourself for all mistakes that you have done in past. If you accept yourself as you are and also love and support yourself, you become your best friend and strengthen the power from within. You could say to yourself that nobody can ever be perfect, our mistakes are natural human experiences and we must not judge ourselves and expect to be perfect. To accept and love yourself are the most important conditions to strengthen the power within you.
